DOES STRESS KEEP YOU UP AT NIGHT?

Anxiety, depression, and sleepless nights created from chronic pain, health worries, burnout, chronically stressful environments can lead to HPA axis dysregulation and unbalanced cortisol levels. If you experience chronic stress or sleeplessness then you should know what the heck the HPA Axis is!

What the heck is the HPA AXIS?

HPA axis stands for Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal axis.
Both the Hypothalamus and Pituitary glands are located in the brain while the adrenal glands are located above the kidneys.

The Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal Axis primarily functions as one of our stress response systems.

After a stressful event occurs, the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) kicks in our fight or flight response.

Next, the HPA Axis kicks into action responding to hormones secreted during the fight or flight response.

The hypothalamus communicates with the pituitary gland which then communicates with the adrenal glands.
In response, the adrenal glands produce cortisol.
The HPA Axis in turn communicates with the SNS to keep the gas peddle down for our stress response.

Here are a few tips to rebalance your HPA axis and further support healing and recovery from burnout.

✅Clean Up Your Diet. Focus on balancing your blood sugar.
✅Avoid Caffeine Until Your HPA axis is regulated. Caffeine mimics the stress response.
✅Engage in Stress Reduction. Mindfulness-based NeuroCoaching strategies, Meditation styles you enjoy, Diaphragmatic Breathing, QiGong & Yoga Nidra are all proven to address chronic stress & burnout.
✅Incorporate Movement and Regular Exercise. Follow a mobility or walking program to help direct excess energy through your nervous system.
✅Get Regular Sun Exposure. 10 minutes of sun gazing at sunrise is optimal
✅Support Your Sleep. Establish good sleep hygiene and bedtime routine such as no tech, screens, or tv 1-2 hours before bed.
✅Grounding – Walk barefoot on grass 5-10 minutes a day or use a ground mat.
